What is a BID?
A business improvement district (BID) is a defined area agreed by secret ballot where businesses choose to pay an additional levy on top of their business rates to fund projects which promote the BID area in ways decided by the management of the BID.
Normally BIDs are funded through a levy but have access to other public and private funding possibilities as well.
BIDs provide many services but do not replace existing council funded services, which are agreed to a performance baseline. BID services may include extra cleaning, targeted security patrols, promoting the area, etc.
The services provided by BIDs are paid for, and directed by, the businesses within the defined rateable value bands and the defined area.
